Newborn care basics every new parent should know

Weighing, feeding and warmth — lessons from our Paediatric Lab.

Newborn care basics every new parent should know

The first weeks with a newborn can feel overwhelming. In our Child Health (Paediatric) Lab, students learn the basics of newborn care — here are a few that every parent can use.

  • Keep the baby warm. Newborns lose heat quickly. Skin-to-skin contact, a covered head and light layers help keep them comfortable.
  • Feed often. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months, on demand, day and night.
  • Cord care. Keep the umbilical cord stump clean and dry, and let it fall off on its own.
  • Track growth. Regular weight checks at your health centre show whether the baby is feeding well.
  • Follow the vaccination schedule. Keep the immunisation card safe and attend every due date.

Contact a doctor immediately if your baby has a fever, is feeding poorly, has difficulty breathing, or seems unusually sleepy or yellow.
